PG sustainability and distributed stewardship
In this video, Professor Emeritus Mike McGinnis outlines his current research project on understanding how the internal dynamics of systems of Polycentric Governance (PG) can either undermine or guarantee its long-term sustainability.
McGinnis argues that students of polycentric governance have tended to rely too much on the positive effects generated through the automatic emergence of order, and should now devote more attention to how the actions undertaken by all participants in PG systems either strengthen or undermine that system’s long-term sustainability.
He concludes that this shared responsibility for good stewardship is a critical component of effective governance that has been neglected by scholars working in the Bloomington School.
