Douglass C. North, a Nobel laureate whose work in applying economic theory to history offered a new understanding of how societies coordinate people’s behavior, died on Monday at his home in Benzonia, Mich. He was 95.

This issue focuses on the Social-ecological systems meta-analysis database (SESMAD), an internationally collaborative meta-analysis project that builds on previous seminal synthetic work on small-scale common-pool resource systems conducted at the Ostrom Workshop. The project is behind the case studies and synthetic articles that compose the issue, along with a special feature on the Spatiality of the Commons and the book reviews section.
