Janine Hiller

Finance, Virginia Tech

Janine Hiller is the R.E. Sorensen Professor in Finance and a Professor of Business Law in the Pamplin College of Business. Dr. Hiller’s research focuses on the intersection of law, ethics and technology in the context of the business environment. She has examined privacy and cybersecurity laws and regulations in diverse areas. Supported by an NSF grant, in 2008 her co-authored article in the American Business Law Journal won the Outstanding Research paper award for a study of technical and regulatory methods for parental consent for children’s online activities. One area of research has focused on electronic health records and privacy. In 2010 Dr. Hiller was a Fulbright Distinguished Professor at the Raoul Wallenberg Institute for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law at Lund University, Sweden, where she studied the Swedish approach to health privacy and electronic health records. Presently she is working in the area of privacy, predictive analytics, and healthcare reform. A second area of research focuses on the role of business in cybersecurity infrastructure, and her most recent research on proactive cyber defense for businesses is forthcoming in the American Business Law Journal.
