The Program on Political, Economic, and Legal Institutions and Organizations (PELIO), created in January 2018, will develop a network of scholars at IU and around the world whose work focuses on how institutions and organizations (formal and informal; local, national, and global) interact to impact processes of development. Development is broadly defined as improvements in economic (growth, distribution, and opportunity), political (stability, competition, and state capacity), legal (rule of law), as well as social (welfare) outcomes. The program will focus on developed as well as developing countries, embracing the view that no end of history is in sight and that so-called developed countries struggle with deficits in all of the above-mentioned areas.
